Leaving the Netherlands: A Financial Decision Guide
Almost every guide written for expats is about arriving. Leaving has its own mechanics, and they're easy to miss precisely because so little is written about them: a contract ends, a family situation changes, or the move abroad was always temporary, and the financial loose ends don't resolve themselves just because you've deregistered.
The decisions tend to come in two waves. Before you go, there's the exit-year tax filing (often an M-form rather than a standard return) and what happens to a Dutch pension you've accrued but can no longer add to. If you're on the 30%-ruling, its ending — whether through departure or its own time limit — has its own handover checklist. And one risk is easy to miss entirely: inheritance-tax exposure (*erfbelasting*) doesn't always end when your Dutch residency does.
The guides below are grouped by when each question actually needs an answer, so you can work through the ones that apply to your specific exit instead of starting from zero.
Before you go
- Leaving the Netherlands: The Financial Exit Checklist
What actually happens to your Box 3 position, your 30%-ruling, and your Dutch pension when you leave — the financial side of moving on that most guides skip.
- What Happens to Your Pension When You Leave the Netherlands (or Change Employer)
How value transfer (waardeoverdracht) actually works when you switch Dutch employers, what happens to your accrued pension if you leave the country entirely, and what the 2026–2028 pension system transition changes.
If you're on the 30%-ruling
- Your FI Plan After the 30%-Ruling Ends
The 30%-ruling doesn't taper off — it stops. Here's how to re-forecast your FI number, withdrawal rate, and Box 3 exposure before the cliff, not after.
- Your Partial Foreign-Taxpayer Status Is Ending: The Box 3 Handover Checklist
There's no separate form for losing partial foreign-taxpayer status — you answer the same Box 2 and Box 3 questions differently before and after your end date. Here's what to gather and check before you file.
What can still catch you
- Erfbelasting: The Inheritance-Tax Risk Expats Don't See Coming
How Dutch inheritance tax hits a worldwide estate, why an FI-sized portfolio makes this worse than most people plan for, and what cross-border succession actually requires.
